Build a Learning Unit tree

A Learning Unit is one element of the structure learners work through. Units form a tree of any depth, and every Unit declares a kind:

• Grouping — organises its child Units. It holds no content or Assessments of its own; it is the branch of the tree.
• Activity — a leaf that holds content and is where Assessments are placed.

You build and arrange this tree from the Structure tab of the offering workspace.

Before you start

• Open the Offering you are teaching from the Offerings list.
• You need manage access for the Offering. Without it, the Structure tab shows the tree read-only.

Add a Unit

1. Open the Offering and select the Structure tab.

2. In the Add unit card, enter a Title.

3. Choose a Unit type — Grouping or Activity.

4. Optionally choose a Parent unit to nest the new Unit inside an existing grouping. Leave it as Root unit to add the Unit at the top level.

5. Select Add unit. The Unit appears in the tree below, carrying a badge for its type and a status badge (new Units start as Draft).

Tip

Build the branches first. Add your grouping Units, then add activity Units into them by setting the Parent unit — or add everything at the root and rearrange it afterwards.

Arrange the tree

The tree shows every Unit with its title, kind, and status, and a count of how many Units the Offering has. There are two ways to reorder and nest Units:

• Drag a Unit onto another to reorder it among its siblings or drop it inside a grouping.
• Use a Unit’s actions menu (the ⋮ button on its row), which offers every arrangement action explicitly:
  • Move up / Move down — reorder the Unit among its siblings.
  • Move to another parent — re-nest the Unit under a different grouping (or back to the root).
  • Rename — change the Unit’s title.
  • Convert to activity / Convert to grouping — switch the Unit’s kind.

Sequence matters: the order of siblings in the tree is the order learners meet them.

Manage a Unit’s lifecycle

Every Unit moves through Draft → Active → Archived. From the actions menu:

• Activate — make a draft Unit active.
• Archive — retire an active Unit. Archival is the normal end of a Unit’s life.
• Restore — bring an archived Unit back to active.

Caution

Delete is for mistakes, not for retiring content. You can delete a Unit only when it — and everything beneath it — carries no learner history: no Assessments and no package assignments. Deleting removes the Unit and its whole subtree. Anything with history can only be archived, and the confirmation dialog will say so.

What you end up with

An ordered, nested tree of Learning Units. Every activity Unit is now a place you can attach an Assessment — the next step in the loop.
